A Crutch

My boyfriend's response to my coming to faith in Christ many years ago was that Christianity was a crutch.  That wasn't exactly how I preceived it, but I wasn't offended by his analogy.  I definitely needed someone/something at that point in my life, and I wasn't afraid to admit it.  The truth is, I think that recognition of our need is a gift from God.  As long as we can paddle our own boat, so to speak, we're not going to come to Christ.  It's just the way we're wired.
I was thinking about his statement this morning.  Due to plantar faciitis, I asked my daughter, Becky, to bring a crutch down from the attic.  Ever since our son, Andrew, badly overturned his ankle, we've had a pair.  The truth is they've come in handy on more than one occassion.  But let's face it,though having a crutch or crutches may help the situation,  they're never going to cure it.
Now, if you're a Christian, think about your relationship with the Lord.  Is He a crutch to you?  Do you hobble around (probably unknowingly) most of the time, but when things really get bad you "bring him out"?  Is he reserved for special occassions like when you lose your job or are given a bad medical prognossis?  Christ was never meant to be a crutch, He was made to be your life.  His intention is that you allow Him to live through you.  He is the vine.  You are the branches.
Personally, I know this is often my story.  Oh, don't get me wrong, I go to church twice a week, I pray, I give, I am involved in ministry.  But all too often, inwardly, I am straying. Prone to wonder, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. But life has a way of bringing me back to Jesus. The trials keep me searching, keep me reaching heavenward.  I hope you are learning to make the Lord your rock, your fortress, your everything.  Anything less is not true Christianity.

  1. I think one doesn't learn to make the Lord their rock. He is our rock, it is about learning to accept it. :)

    1. Thanks for the comment, Hezron. Yes, I believe it will take each of us a lifetime to learn and accept all that God has for us.
